DELAND - One man's vision of transforming a run-down neighborhood into a "garden district" is beginning to take root.
About 100 large sabal palm trees have been planted in the past few weeks along a stretch of East Voorhis Avenue.
And more
landscape improvements, designed o give the road a pedestrian-friendly
feel, are on the way, said Michael Arth, a home and urban designer who
is behind the revitalization effort of what was once a high-crime area.
"We're trying to create a gateway into the town," Arth said
Tuesday afternoon, adding that more palms will eventually line Voorhis
from Amelia Avenue to Woodland Boulevard. "They make the road feel
